You’re alone, but not lonely, accompanied by… well, we’re not sure, really. But where Inside and Limbo weave unsettling, dark tales, FAR: Lone Sails is an altogether more delicate, relaxed affair. And just like those games, FAR: Lone Sails, too, is a bare-bones tale that tells you nothing and everything, conveying its pleasure and panic through stunning visuals and sublime score alone. This is a 2.5D side-scroller that tasks you with forever moving towards the right of your screen, your character a bright drop of scarlet scurrying through an otherwise monochrome world. Just like genre stalwarts Limbo and Inside.

Whilst it’s already debuted on PC and console, this delightful puzzler is one of those games so incredibly well suited to Nintendo Switch that it’s a wonder it’s taken so long to get here. Part exploration, part platformer, puzzler, and resource management sim, FAR: Lone Sails almost defies description, and yet it is also indisputably one of the very best things we’ve had the pleasure of playing all year. FAR: Lone Sails is a game that is both nothing and everything a delicious stew of disparate ideas that come together in a way that shouldn’t make sense, but somehow do. You’ll see them again and again, poking out of the ground like a shattered rib cage, the cool steel bones of a now-dead age reaching up to pierce an angry red sky. As you journey onward – because that’s all you do here you just journey onward, forever rumbling towards the right of your screen. The terrain is cold and unyielding here, the horizon sprinkled with the snapped struts of an industrial era gone by, resentful reminders of what used to be but is unceremoniously no more. You rely on this machine as much as it relies on you, and the connection I felt with it by the end was unexpectedly deep. That not only introduces complexity as you grow more comfortable with the workings of the machine, it’s also massively rewarding to see it tangibly grow and change as you progress. It lets you get you comfortable with the basics of fueling and piloting your ship, then slowly starts adding upgrades and improvements to your vehicle along the way so you can learn them one at a time.

But what’s clever about how Far: Lone Sails silently teaches you how to play is that it starts things off simple – so simple that you won’t even have those signature sails at first. That undercuts that tension just a tad toward the end of your journey, and can make the world a little less mysterious on repeat playthroughs. There’s an enjoyable stress that comes from worrying about how much fuel you have – though it’s a fear that may be slightly scarier in your mind than in reality, since fuel is in safe abundance if you are good about grabbing it frequently and burning it efficiently. Aerofly FS 2 Flight Simulatorĭuring those stops (and often along the way to them) you’ll also be scavenging as much fuel as you possibly can to stow on hooks in your already cramped ship. These discreet levels break up the pace nicely and can occasionally offer some intriguing platforming puzzles to challenge you. You might come across a gate you’ll need to unlock, forcing you to hop out of your vehicle and search around on foot for exactly how to do that before you can proceed. Between open stretches of road (often filled with obstacles to overcome or hazards, like weather, to avoid) are occasional blockades in your path.

Very little of what you’re doing or why you’re doing it is explicitly told to you, but by the end of the roughly three-hour story you’ll be driving like a pro and probably have a good idea as to why. You’ll have to feed fuel barrels into the machine’s tank, release pressure that builds up (which will also give you a boost) before it explodes, and put out fires or make simple repairs as things inevitably go wrong.

Most of the time you’ll be inside that vessel, hopping around its guts as it trundles through a harsh, seemingly post-apocalyptic world – the cause is never explained, but most of what you’re driving across looks like a dried-up ocean. But instead of just having some simple platforming puzzles to solve, here you’re also piloting a large contraption that’s alternately driven by either massive, engine-powered wheels or a set of tattered, collapsable sails. Its mostly monotone color palette and “scroll from left to right, don’t ask why” structure must’ve been inspired by Playdead’s work.
